A Maritime Common Information Sharing Environment (CISE) is a collective need to ensure Safe, Secure and Clean seas around Europe for its security and sustainability. Our combined ability to adapt to the modern global context requires the sharing of relevant information across all maritime surveillance sectors and countries, to increase awareness and responsiveness throughout the European Maritime Domain. http://ec.europa.eu/maritimeaffairs/policy/integrated_maritime_surveillance/index_en.htm
Maritime Domain Awareness is an inter-agency and international effort to detect and prevent threats at sea or in any navigable waterway. The NIEM Vessel Position exchange from the Maritime Domain supports the effective understanding of anything associated with global maritime that could impact the United States' security, safety, economy, or environment. NIEM facilitates this understanding through effective, timely sharing of vital, secure information among many key partners by representing vessels, people, cargo, and maritime locations and activities. For more information on Geo4NIEM Maritime Domain Awareness, please visit NIEM.gov.
The United States Department of Transportation's Maritime Safety and Security Information System is a novel, low cost, and rapidly deployed, global vessel traffic monitoring system used to enhance Global Maritime Domain Awareness. The program is a 2008 Innovations in American Government Award winner.
MDA BlueHawk provides an unclassified multi-sensor Maritime Domain Awareness picture to maritime security organizations worldwide. Fusing space-based radar, AIS vessel tracking and other maritime information, MDA BlueHawk monitors vast maritime regions, rapidly detecting potential threats as far from shore as possible. Volpe used its data and system engineering expertise in 2006 to develop a maritime domain awareness (MDA) network known as the Maritime Safety and Security Information System (MSSIS) for the U.S. Navy Sixth Fleet. MSSIS is a low-cost, unclassified, near real-time network that is used to track vessels as they traverse the world's waterways. Countries that employ MSSIS in their shipping operations are able to share data from Automatic Identification Systems (AIS). The primary goal of MSSIS is to increase maritime safety and security through a comprehensive situational awareness display of vessels equipped with AIS. Today, more than 70 countries have joined the MSSIS network, which has significantly improved maritime safety and economic stability for participating countries. The system curre...
Pentagon Asked To Work Closely With India In Maritime Domain. A key Senate panel has asked the Pentagon to reassess its approach to partner with India and cooperate with it in anti-submarine warfare, amid China’s increased naval presence in the Indian Ocean. An amendment in this regard to the National Defence Authorisation Act (NDAA)-2018, moved by Senator Ted Cruz, was passed by the Senate Armed Services Committee early this week. It is a part of Cruz’s effort to further implement the designation of India as a ‘Major Defence Partner’. “Few partnerships in the 21st century carry more strategic significance than United States partnership with India, the world’s largest democracy,” said Cruz’s office. “Even so, Senator Cruz believes that current bilateral cooperation and joint development...

Presentation given by Rommel N. Carvalho at the 14th International Conference on Information Fusion, which was held in "the city of broad shoulders", Chicago, Illinois, USA. Title: Modeling a Probabilistic Ontology for Maritime Domain Awareness Abstract: Situational awareness and prediction are essential elements of information fusion. Both involve various types of uncertainty and require a sound automated inferential process. Probabilistic ontologies support uncertainty management in semantically aware systems, and facilitate modular, interoperable systems. This paper describes the process of developing a probabilistic ontology for a Maritime Domain Awareness application. The ontology was created to support identification of ships behaving suspiciously enough to be declared ships of int...
